天正10年（1582年）6月2日の本能寺の変で、信長の小姓・森蘭丸が明智の兵と戦って討たれた場面である。「豊臣勲功記」という秀吉の生涯を追う揃物の一図である。
歌川芳藤（1828〜1887）は子ども向けのおもちゃ絵で知られたが、晩年にはこうした三枚続きの武者絵も手がけた。この図の翌年に没している。この摺りはミシガン州ディアボーンのロバート・コールターの旧蔵で、1995年にシカゴ美術館が買った。

歌川芳藤
歌川芳藤（1828〜1887）は「おもちゃ絵の芳藤」と呼ばれた。歌川国芳門下に学びながら、錦絵の主戦場である役者絵や武者絵ではなく、子供の手に渡る一枚——切って組み立てる組上絵、着せ替え、双六、そして猫尽くしの戯画——に生涯を捧げた絵師である。
