活動期間は1891年から1898年まで、7年に満たない。その間にオーブリー・ビアズリーは、黒いインクの線と面だけで、19世紀末のイギリスで最も名の知られた挿絵画家になった。 保険会社の事務員だった1891年、ホイッスラーが手がけたレイランド邸の「孔雀の間」を見て、日本美術に惹かれた。
