レンブラント・ファン・レイン
ライデンの粉屋の息子が、光と影だけで人間の内面を描き切る画家になった。若くしてライデン大学に籍を置くも学業には向かず、地元の画家に手ほどきを受けたのちアムステルダムで ピーテル・ラストマン のもとに学ぶ。歴史画の物語性と劇的な明暗を吸収し、20代半ばには早くも独自の様式で注目を集めた。
