かつての役者絵は、名前や紋所を見なければ誰か分からないほど、顔が型通りに描かれていた。江戸中期の浮世絵師・勝川春章は、一筆斎文調とともに一人ひとりの顔を描き分ける似顔絵を生み出し、肉筆の美人画でも名を上げた。門下からは葛飾北斎が出ている。 春章は宮川春水に絵を学び、画姓を宮川から勝宮川、さらに勝川へと改めた。
