ロンドンの理髪店の息子として生まれ、十四歳で王立芸術院付属美術学校に入る。早熟な水彩の腕前で早くから注目され、二十代でアカデミー正会員に選ばれるという異例の出世を遂げた。若い頃はクロード・ロランやリチャード・ウィルソンの風景画を手本に、理想化された古典的な光の風景を描いていたが、ヴェネツィアやアルプスへの旅を重ねるうちに、彼にしか見えていないものを描き始める…
