五百石を食む旗本の家に生まれ、十代将軍徳川家治の絵具方をつとめた武士が、なぜ遊里の女を描く絵師になったのか——鳥文斎栄之（1756〜1829）の生涯は、この転身の一点にすべてが凝縮している。本名は細田時富。幼少より狩野派六代当主の御用絵師狩野栄川院典信に学び、その一字を拝領して「栄之」と号した。
