肉筆画を残すことの少なかった絵師がいる。北尾重政（1739〜1820）——江戸小伝馬町の書肆・須原屋三郎兵衛の長男として生まれ、書物と版木の匂いのなかで育ったこの浮世絵師は、生涯を通じて一枚ものの絵絹より版本の世界に軸足を置きつづけた。
