七歳で書を披露して神童と騒がれた子が、大人になって山という山に登り、湖という湖を渡り歩く旅人になった。京都の貧しい家に生まれた池大雅は、扇屋の店先で絵を描いて糊口をしのぎながら、誰に本格的に師事するでもなく、舶来の画譜――特に『芥子園画伝』――を頼りに中国文人画の呼吸を独学で身につけていった。
