本阿弥家は代々、将軍家お抱えの刀剣鑑定・研磨・浄拭を家業とする一族だった。光悦もこの家に生まれ、刀剣を見る目の確かさで名を馳せたが、彼の名を不朽にしたのは刀ではなく、書と、焼き物と、漆の仕事だった。 まず筆を執らせれば、伸びやかで力強い連綿体の仮名がほとばしり出る。
